| Love Check-Up: Online Dating Advice From Those Who Know the Pitfalls
With so many people working late and being tired of the bar scene, the internet is becoming a more and more popular way to meet someone. So, today's Love Check-Up focuses on on-line dating.
Here are the thoughts of two local singles.
"I call it the good the bad and the ugly," says Regina Sooey, a busy real estate agent.
For Jay Magee, a busy public relations specialist for Community Hospice, "I've done that on and off, and it's more misses than hits for me."
Although, Regina and Jay both have had their share of bad dates from dating sites, they do like the convenience of it. And, they have learned how to avoid some of the traps when making an on-line profile or checking out others.
Jay says, " The way I see it, you want people to know who you are.

As it's Valentine's day, it's only fitting to talk about love... or lack there of... or rather the unique ways technology is helping people find love. This morning, the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle is stamped with a great story about how Silicon Valley execs have put love second to their job and are now using what appears to be a very successful matchmaking service in order to find the right mate. To be fair though, this strategy is expensive-- ($500 for entry level?!?! What?) So we've hunted down some other services that are less costly, less time consuming and probably less helpful, but definitely very entertaining... SA wary of online dating
Despite numerous websites for online matchmaking, the international research group Synovate on Wednesday revealed that only 12% of all South African internet users had tried to find love on the internet. According to Synovate, who wanted to find out how web surfers in South Africa, Brazil, France, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Romania and the US felt about online romance; the French tried it most, followed by the US. "More than a third of the respondents who did not seek online romance, believed only desperate people used the internet to find love," said Synovate. "The results showed a relatively equal distribution between those who believed the internet to be a fantastic way of meeting people (49%), and those who believed it is a waste of time (48%)." Among South Africans, 68% said they would never even consider it, 48% said they would rather meet somebody face to face, and 21% believed internet romance was dangerous.
